Chip, Vanessa, Jennifer and Clark will provide us with updates on the Quendall Terminals site; also the Senza Lakeview Plat (the large lot at N. 40th Street & Lake Wash. Blvd. N. that is currently being prepared for new homes); and also the Kennydale Market Rezone Request (site of present Shell Gas Station, etc. on N. 30th Street ).
Also, Jim Seitz, Transportation Director for the Dept. of Public Works, will be on hand to address any of your transportation related questions.

2018 KENNYDALE GARAGE SALE WRAP-UP

​There was a bit of rain during the night proceeding the garage sale, and the early morning of June 23 saw some overcast and a chill in the air.  But Kennydale’s residents who planned to have a sale regardless were pleased to see the weather improve greatly, and by 9 am, most of them had their wares set out and had eager buyers on hand.
 
The Kennydale Neighborhood Association again provided red balloons to all sellers to help make their sales more visible; this year we initially had two distribution points set up, and a good number of sellers dropped by to get their balloons.  By 9 am, we had one or two dozens balloons left, so our volunteers drove around to hand deliver the remainder to sellers who didn’t have time to pick them up.  This provided our KNA team with the opportunity to get an exact count of the number of sales, which was: 13 in “Upper” Kennydale, and 42 in “Lower” Kennydale.  Given that we likely missed a few sales due to several parts of the neighborhood where the streets only run for a few blocks, we’re reporting a total of 59 sales for the day.  A few sales also were extended to Friday and/or Sunday, which makes a lot of sense in terms of $$ gained for one’s overall effort!
 
We would like to thank all residents who participated in this years sales, also our Garage Sale Chairperson, Rajendra Agrawaal, and Saturday’s volunteers who helped to ensure that this sale would again be a great “neighborly” event: Janice Dougherty, Justin Hoover, Lynne and Bruce Milnor, Derrick Reese, and Vicki & Darius Richards!

HELLO, SUMMER and HELLO KENNYDALE!​

The Kennydale Neighborhood Association (KNA) Board members send our warm greetings to you and all the other 2550+ households in Kennydale who are receiving this newsletter.  If you are new to the area, or if you have lived here for some time but not been a member, here is some basic information about who we are and what we do: KNA was formed in 1999 and is one of the 90+ Renton neighborhoods that are part of the City of Renton Neighborhood Program. Defining who we are is best expressed in our Mission Statement: “The Kennydale Neighborhood Association is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Kennydale, and fostering community spirit.”
 
We accomplish this mission by:
  • Communicating with Kennydale’s residents through this newsletter, via our website www.kennydale.org, at quarterly neighborhood meetings, and by email messages to our members.  The intent of these communications is ensure a 3-way exchange of information between Kennydale’s residents, the KNA membership, and the City of Renton on issues that are important to all parties; also to help make our citizens aware of all the services and resources available to them through the City (see www.rentonwa.gov) and other entities.
  • Conducting social events throughout the year that allow Kennydale residents to meet, socialize and gain valuable “face time”.  These events include our annual Garage Sale, an Ice Cream Social in July, an Ice Cream Social + outdoor movie in August and a Holiday Bonfire in December.
  • Implementing neighborhood projects that utilize funds from the City of Renton’s Neighborhood Grant Program, together with volunteer citizen labor, to beautify and maintain public areas within the neighborhood.  Examples of past projects include the “Welcome to Kennydale” signs and landscaping at I-405 Exit 6, and the landscaping at the Kennydale Beach parking lot.
 
In all of these endeavors, KNA receives valuable support from our members, the Renton Neighborhood  Program, and area businesses who advertise in our newsletter and who help sponsor our social events.  To put all of this together and move forward in an organized manner, KNA is fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced Board of Directors.
 
If you want to be a part of improving the quality of life here in Kennydale and shaping what our neighborhood will become, joining (or renewing your membership in) KNA is a great way to start!  It’s really easy:

​INTRODUCING “KENNYDALE ROCKS”

“Kennydale Rocks”, a new art activity for kids, will be held under the direction of Kelly Affleck, Art Instructor and Artist, and Kennydale resident and Artist, Karen Easton.
This will take place at KNA’s first Ice Cream Social on June 17, 2018, in the Art Building at Kennydale Lions Park, 2428 Aberdeen Ave. NE. 
Rocks, paint and brushes will be provided. On the top side of the rock, kids can paint an arty message or their favorite flower or design. On the bottom of the rock, KNA has pre-painted a message.  It says “Found Me?  Keep or Re-hide.” It then asks the finder to post a picture on our Facebook page*.
After painting the rocks, the kids will be able to take their finished Rock home and they can hide it in Kennydale, or they can take it on a vacation and hide it for some other lucky person to find!
 
Come and join in the fun!

FREE MICRO-CHIPPING FOR RENTON RESIDENTS’ DOGS & CATS

Almost 70% of lost pets in Renton do not have licenses.  Owners of unlicensed pets can be charged up to $250 when reclaiming their animals through the City, but pets found with both a license and a microchip are returned with no charge to their owners.
 
Fortunately, Renton residents can get their pets microchipped for FREE through a partnership formed by Eastside Veterinary Associates and the Renton Regional Community Foundation.  This service is available at Eastside Veterinary Associates, 1700 NE 44th Street, weekdays, on a first-come, first-served basis.  Check-in time is 11:30 am. Please note: Proof of Renton residency is required.
 
The microchipping procedure consists of inserting a small electronic “chip” about the size of a grain of rice into dog or cat’s shoulder blade.  When the lost pet is recovered, an animal control officer or a veterinarian can scan the animal and retrieve the owner information from the chip.
 
All dogs and cats 4 months and older are required by Renton laws to be licensed.  Residents aged 61 or older who meet certain income qualifications may qualify for a non-transferable license; please call 425-430-6924 for further information.

A further note from KNA….
 
Kennydale residents who have lost a dog or cat and are able to recover it are fortunate indeed.  Our reality here in Kennydale is: with coyotes now being seen in all parts of the neighborhood, the extended absence of “Fluffy” or “Fido” from your home may indicate that your pet has met an unfortunate end.  We believe that very few people willingly let their dogs run free, but some cat owners feel that their cat will be “happier” when it is allowed to roam.  This practice is not doing the cat any favors, both in terms of the cat’s unnecessary exposure to diseases, and the possibility that it will become the guest of honor at the Coyote Feast.  So please consider making your cat “indoor only”; it will get used to the concept, and it will be healthier as a result!

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY PREVENTION TIPS, Revisited (Again)

Looking at some of the postings on social media, one might get the erroneous impression that Kennydale is a hotbed of crime.  The reality is,  Kennydale compares very favorably with other Renton neighborhoods as to occurrences of crime (check it out yourself on www.crimereports.com ) .  But crimes do happen here, and in our opinion the best course of action for all citizens is to read and adopt the following list of Residential Burglary Prevention Tips, which has been available from the Renton Police Dept. for some time.  These Tips have been provided at neighborhood Block Watch meetings, in the Kennydale News and through presentations at KNA Neighborhood meetings by Officer Cyndie Parks, RPD’s Community Program Coordinator.  For those of you who have implemented some or many of these Tips, congratulations!  For those of you who haven’t, now is the time to stop being a potential (or actual) victim by implementing whichever of the following precautions apply to your particular home: About a dozen of these cost you nothing in time or money! We have highlighted those in bold: 1)     Install lights by all exterior doors, and the motion detecting type at front and garage doors (or install LED lamps on a timer and run them all night).  Make sure your fixtures have glass covers that are not easily removed.2)     Trim shrubs back from doors and windows3)     Don’t leave exterior lights on during the daytime; that suggests that you are away from home4)     Always close your garage door, and cover “view” windows so that no one can see inside5)     Leave nothing in your car (especially the garage door opener); lock it up; park in garage if possible6)     Secure outdoor sheds with a high quality lock (bolt cutters will cut most padlocks) 7)     Always lock your doors and windows, even when you’re at home8)     Use solid core or metal exterior doors9)     Install 4-screw strike plates with 3” wood screws to penetrate the stud within your door frame on all exterior entry doors10)  Use deadbolt locks on exterior doors and double-cylinder deadbolt locks if glass is within 3 feet of the lock11)   Install peepholes on doors with 160 degree views (if you don’t have  a window near the door)12)   Do not hide keys outside; leave them with a trusted neighbor13)   Add drop bars, wooden dowels, or pinning devices to windows and sliding glass doors14)   Keep valuables in a safe deposit box15)   Use a locking, heavy-duty metal mailbox (not plastic) *16)   Take outgoing mail directly to the post office or a blue Postal pick-up box17)   Never let strangers into your home.  If someone knocks, answer them through a closed, locked door and keep it locked until you verify that they have legitimate business with you. Check their ID18)   Never leave notes for anyone on the door19)   Consider installing a residential alarm system*20)   Consider installing a good quality video surveillance system*   WHILE ON VACATION:21)  Place a radio and interior lights on timers22)  Put mail and newspapers on hold23)  Ask your trusted neighbor to pick up any packages or fliers from your driveway or porch, and to “keep an eye on things”24) Sign up with the Renton Police Department’s Vacation House Check Program (425)430-7571 or www.rentonwa.gov .  * When shopping for a locking mailbox, residential alarm system, or video surveillance system, do your research!  Amazon.com appears to be an excellent place to find out what’s available, and to learn what their other customers like – or don’t like – about these types of products. When you are ready to make a purchase, also keep in mind our local stores here in Renton!   Please note that prices for alarm systems and monitoring vary widely.  Systems that include mandatory monitoring, annual contracts, etc. can be very expensive.  The City of Renton has posted some very revealing information on this subject.  To learn more, go to www.old.rentonwa.gov and then follow the path: Living>Law Enforcement and Crime Prevention>Crime Prevention>Home Security Systems It is the responsibility of every citizen to be vigilant, take the proper steps to protect yourselves and your property, and call 911 if you see: a crime in progress; any suspicious activity; or any time a person fears for their safety or the safety of others.  There are other good reasons for calling 911, too.  For a full discussion, go to the City of Renton website at www.old.rentonwa.gov and follow the links:  Emergencies>9-1-1
