Kennydale Elementary School, 1700 NE 28th StreetSpecial Presentations by the following City of Renton Representatives Chip Vincent, Administrator, Dept. of Community and Economic Development (CED); Vanessa Dolbee, Current Planning Manager, CED; Jennifer Henning, Planning Director, CED; Clark Close, Senior Planner, CED; Chip, Vanessa, Jennifer and Clark will provide us with updates on the Quendall Terminals site; also the Senza Lakeview Plat (the large lot at N. 40th Street & Lake Wash. Blvd. N. that is currently being prepared for new homes); and also the Kennydale Market Rezone Request (site of present Shell Gas Station, etc. on N. 30th Street ). Also, Jim Seitz, Transportation Director for the Dept. of Public Works, will be on hand to address any of your transportation related questions. Special Presentation by Leslie Betlack, Director, Renton Parks Planning and Natural Resources; Cailin Hunsaker, Director, Renton Parks and Golf Course; Leslie and Cailin will update us on Kennydale’s ERC Trail and plans for extending the May Creek Trail. Rocale Timmons, Senior Vice President, Planning and Development for SECO; Rocale will provide us with updates and additional information about SECO’s hotel and office complex at Southport including: Plans for the Water Taxi, Shoreline Improvements, Traffic Impacts, the Park Ave. Extension, and more! The KNA Nominating Committee is pleased to submit the following names for Officer & Director positions:
OFFICERS President: Darius Richards Vice-President: Vicki Richards Secretary: Derrick Reese Treasurer: Janice Dougherty DIRECTORS Caitlyn Kushin, Paul Miller, Luke Welling, David Huhs, Leah Battin, Mike Battin All other Directors are in the middle of their two-year term, therefore their election is not required at this time. All persons who are current KNA members are eligible to participate in the voting at the October 30, 2018 neighborhood meeting. The term of office for all these nominees starts on January 1, 2019. Respectfully, the KNA Nominating Committee: Rajendra Agrawaal (Chair), Luke Welling, Justin Hoover, Derrick Reese, Marcie Palmer and Vicki Richards (alternate). There was a bit of rain during the night proceeding the garage sale, and the early morning of June 23 saw some overcast and a chill in the air. But Kennydale’s residents who planned to have a sale regardless were pleased to see the weather improve greatly, and by 9 am, most of them had their wares set out and had eager buyers on hand.
The Kennydale Neighborhood Association again provided red balloons to all sellers to help make their sales more visible; this year we initially had two distribution points set up, and a good number of sellers dropped by to get their balloons. By 9 am, we had one or two dozens balloons left, so our volunteers drove around to hand deliver the remainder to sellers who didn’t have time to pick them up. This provided our KNA team with the opportunity to get an exact count of the number of sales, which was: 13 in “Upper” Kennydale, and 42 in “Lower” Kennydale. Given that we likely missed a few sales due to several parts of the neighborhood where the streets only run for a few blocks, we’re reporting a total of 59 sales for the day. A few sales also were extended to Friday and/or Sunday, which makes a lot of sense in terms of $$ gained for one’s overall effort! We would like to thank all residents who participated in this years sales, also our Garage Sale Chairperson, Rajendra Agrawaal, and Saturday’s volunteers who helped to ensure that this sale would again be a great “neighborly” event: Janice Dougherty, Justin Hoover, Lynne and Bruce Milnor, Derrick Reese, and Vicki & Darius Richards! The Kennydale Neighborhood Association (KNA) Board members send our warm greetings to you and all the other 2550+ households in Kennydale who are receiving this newsletter. If you are new to the area, or if you have lived here for some time but not been a member, here is some basic information about who we are and what we do: KNA was formed in 1999 and is one of the 90+ Renton neighborhoods that are part of the City of Renton Neighborhood Program. Defining who we are is best expressed in our Mission Statement: “The Kennydale Neighborhood Association is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Kennydale, and fostering community spirit.”

In all of these endeavors, KNA receives valuable support from our members, the Renton Neighborhood Program, and area businesses who advertise in our newsletter and who help sponsor our social events. To put all of this together and move forward in an organized manner, KNA is fortunate to have a dedicated and experienced Board of Directors. If you want to be a part of improving the quality of life here in Kennydale and shaping what our neighborhood will become, joining (or renewing your membership in) KNA is a great way to start! Darius Richards, KNA President and the KNA Board “Kennydale Rocks”, a new art activity for kids, will be held under the direction of Kelly Affleck, Art Instructor and Artist, and Kennydale resident and Artist, Karen Easton.
This will take place at KNA’s first Ice Cream Social on June 17, 2018, in the Art Building at Kennydale Lions Park, 2428 Aberdeen Ave. NE. Rocks, paint and brushes will be provided. On the top side of the rock, kids can paint an arty message or their favorite flower or design. On the bottom of the rock, KNA has pre-painted a message. It says “Found Me? Keep or Re-hide.” It then asks the finder to post a picture on our Facebook page*. After painting the rocks, the kids will be able to take their finished Rock home and they can hide it in Kennydale, or they can take it on a vacation and hide it for some other lucky person to find! Come and join in the fun! *In order to save time, KNA will pre-print the message on the bottom of all rocks. Go to Kennydale Rocks Facebook Page - www.facebook.com/KennydaleRocks Almost 70% of lost pets in Renton do not have licenses. Owners of unlicensed pets can be charged up to $250 when reclaiming their animals through the City, but pets found with both a license and a microchip are returned with no charge to their owners.
Fortunately, Renton residents can get their pets microchipped for FREE through a partnership formed by Eastside Veterinary Associates and the Renton Regional Community Foundation. This service is available at Eastside Veterinary Associates, 1700 NE 44th Street, weekdays, on a first-come, first-served basis. Check-in time is 11:30 am. Please note: Proof of Renton residency is required. The microchipping procedure consists of inserting a small electronic “chip” about the size of a grain of rice into dog or cat’s shoulder blade. When the lost pet is recovered, an animal control officer or a veterinarian can scan the animal and retrieve the owner information from the chip. All dogs and cats 4 months and older are required by Renton laws to be licensed. Residents aged 61 or older who meet certain income qualifications may qualify for a non-transferable license; please call 425-430-6924 for further information. Information for this article is from the June 2018 Renton City News A further note from KNA…. Kennydale residents who have lost a dog or cat and are able to recover it are fortunate indeed. Our reality here in Kennydale is: with coyotes now being seen in all parts of the neighborhood, the extended absence of “Fluffy” or “Fido” from your home may indicate that your pet has met an unfortunate end. We believe that very few people willingly let their dogs run free, but some cat owners feel that their cat will be “happier” when it is allowed to roam. This practice is not doing the cat any favors, both in terms of the cat’s unnecessary exposure to diseases, and the possibility that it will become the guest of honor at the Coyote Feast. So please consider making your cat “indoor only”; it will get used to the concept, and it will be healthier as a result! The past year’s history of temperature extremes, floods, and hurricanes in other states serves to heighten one’s awareness that we are fortunate by comparison, but we still need to prepare for emergencies or disasters in our local neighborhood. Kennydale and the rest of Renton, like all communities in the Puget Sound area, is susceptible to any number of man-made disasters, including the probability of earthquakes, damage from wind storms, and the possibility of fires if we were to experience the critical combination of high winds and hot, dry weather. So, our reality here is: in a widespread disaster, communications will be disrupted, roads and bridges may be rendered impassible, and there simply will not be enough Emergency Services personnel to provide a timely response to every citizen in need. In other words, for the first few days, we will likely be on our own; everyday activities such as getting gasoline or food, or finding a working ATM may become impossible. And if your residence is made uninhabitable or inaccessible, even basic clothing and shelter could become a challenge (remember that family, friends and neighbors will have their own problems to deal with)!.
The good news is: the City of Renton’s Emergency Management Dept. has done an excellent job of preparing for emergency and disaster-related events, and also in providing increased awareness by its citizens that they too need to take responsibility for being prepared. Perhaps the best first step is to download the “Disaster Supply Kit, buy a couple of 40 gallon garbage cans, and look around your garage and closets for clothing, cooking supplies, extra food, basic camping gear and other items that appear on the Kit list.. You may need to buy some items, or perhaps do some trading with friends/neighbors so that you all are basically prepared (check out the Kennydale Neighborhood garage sale on June 23rd, too). Then find a secure storage area to put your containers where they will be accessible after an earthquake. Keep an inventory list, update it as needed, and keep an eye on the expiration dates for the food. As 2017 drew to a close, the KNA Board bid a fond farewell to three valued members who have retired from our board:
Keith Altenhof, who joined the board in 2016. Keith shared his experience as a teacher at Newport Senior High School to create for KNA a process for identifying high school students as potential candidates for the position of Student Board Member. Mary Erikson, who also joined the board in 2016. Mary became the administrator of our website and Facebook pages in August, 2016; her timely and well organized posts have really helped KNA to have a strong footprint in social media. Mac Jahnke, a long-time KNA member who joined the board in 2012 and also served as our Secretary during the period 2013 through 2016. KNA is pleased to announce the addition of three new board members, who were elected at the KNA neighborhood meeting on October 24, 2017. In addition to their other roles on the board, they will chair the following positions: Karen Edwards will be the Administrator of KNA’s Facebook and website (www.kennydale.org) pages. Marcie Palmer will continue to be Chairperson for the Fall Food Drive. Derrick Reese will be the KNA Liaison to Hazen High and Kennydale Youth. For the second year in a row, a Kennydale Elementary School Kindergarten class has won the Annual Kennydale Food Drive contest,…..but this year, it was Ms. Diane Mitchell's kindergarten students who won, by collecting 389 food items. Overall, the school’s students brought in 2321 food items, plus 70 pairs of brand new socks that were contributed by Ms. Emily Wong’s First Graders. As in previous years, the winning class will be treated to a pizza party, to be held in their classroom on January 19th. And again, Papa John’s Pizza at 4710 NE 4th Street has graciously offered to donate 5 large pizzas for this event.
As we have done in past years, all the donated items were transported to the REACH Center of Hope at City Hall. Volunteers who assisted in this daily effort include the Food drive chairperson, Marcie Palmer, and her son Michael, plus Kennydale residents Angela Troy, CarolAnn Witschi, Pam & Paul Miller, Kelsy Coha, Lew & Sally Jones, Leah Battin and her son Jack, Lynne Milnor, Marlene Winter, and Darius & Vicki Richards. And of course special thanks to all the students’ parents who supported their kids in this effort, and to other folks from the Kennydale community who brought items to the school. |
