The response of Kennydale residents to KNA’s collection of school supplies and basic clothing items has been extremely gratifying this year. The need for these items goes on year-round, but KNA puts a particular emphasis on getting these items together at the annual neighborhood picnic and in the preceding summer months, so that they will be ready for donation to Kennydale Elementary School students during the first week of school. This year we received a good quantity of supplies that had been carefully selected by the donors, and a record amount of $200 in cash from others, which allowed several KNA Board members to shop the back-to-school sales to utilize every dollar to its best advantage. On September 4, KNA Board members Darius Richards, Sue Jahnke, Vicki Richards and Faye Janders (pictured below) delivered a variety of backpacks, school supplies, and clothing basics to the school. We estimate the value of these items to be around $ 700. A great big thank you to all who donated items, shopped, and/or contributed funds towards this endeavor!

At our July 21st social, we served about 150 people and went through 5 gallons of ice cream. Event chairperson Rebeckah Orton tried something new this year and bought swirled flavors (like chocolate fudge in vanilla, rather than plain old vanilla) and this turned out to be quite a hit! Thank you, Rebeckah.
In addition to ice cream service, our social on August 15th also featured the Disney movie “Frozen” shown by Renton Neighborhood Program staff on their giant inflatable screen. Very appropriate, as the evening was somewhat chilly, but regardless of that, it was nice to see a crowd of about 75 people enjoying the ice cream and socializing, and about 125 people at the movie. Thank you’s to KNA Board member Janice Dougherty for chairing the ice cream service, and to Board member Sue Jahnke for securing the movie through the Renton Neighborhood Program’s “Screen on the Green” mini-grant process. The Kennydale Neighborhood Association’s first Annual Food Drive was undertaken in 2011, and in the 5 years since then, we have observed two things: the need is always there, and the Kennydale community has consistently and generously responded to that need. So we are looking forward to this fall and another successful drive, which will start on Monday, November 2, and end on the day before Thanksgiving, Nov. 25. As in past years, the Kennydale Elementary School will be the collection point for all donated food; please look for the collection barrel(s) in the school lobby. And of course we will have a contest between the classrooms, and the class that collects the most items will be rewarded with a pizza party! KNA Youth Board member Devin Dolling will again chair this year’s Drive.
Of course, all Kennydale residents are encouraged to drop a food donation off at the school; you don’t need to have children attending there! Last year, over 2656 items were donated by Kennydale’s residents, and we’re hoping for even more this year. Acceptable donations include non-perishable goods such as canned food, pasta, boxed meals, juice, cereal, etc. In the interest of balanced nutrition, no leftover Halloween candy, please! KNA will again be delivering all the food to the Reach Center of Hope. The Center of Hope is a Renton organization that creates a safe environment for mothers and children to seek shelter, a place for showering, laundry, food and counseling. For more information about them, please visit their website at www.reachrenton.org . Thank you for anything you can share with this very worthwhile organization! Tuesday, October 27th, 6:45 pm*
