As in previous years, the students and staff at Kennydale Elementary, along with residents from throughout our neighborhood, responded with an outpouring of canned and boxed food, juices, pasta and other food items. The food drive was held November 3rd through 26th, and as in previous years, all items were donated to the REACH: Center of Hope facility in downtown Renton. All classes at KE School participated in this drive, and the class collecting the most items was rewarded with a pizza party! Congratulations to Kelli Leininger’s 1st Grade class for collecting the most items. In total, the school’s students brought in 2231 items, and another 425 items were brought in by neighborhood residents. This year, the count was done based on number of items, rather than by weight. Several times each week, neighborhood volunteers picked up the donated items from barrels in the school’s lobby, and delivered them to the Center of Hope. Judging from the very full storage room at the Center on Nov. 26, this was indeed a successful drive. Special thanks to Ms. Leininger and her first graders, and to all the students (and their parents) and to the staff of KE School, particularly 3rd grade teacher Michele Leuders, who prepared flyers for the students to take home. Thanks also to all the others who supported this year’s drive: Delivery of Collected items to the REACH Center: Lynne Milnor, Tom & Mary Jenkins, Kim Brown, Darius and Vicki Richards, Faye Janders, Jon Danielson and students from Hazen High School Donation of 4 Extra Large Pizzas: Papa John’s, 4710 NE 4th Street in Renton Highlands ~ and all participating residents from throughout Kennydale! ~ Devin Dolling, Food Drive Chairman
