KNA Members Maintain Landscaping at Kennydale Beach Parking Lot.
Ever wonder who maintains the Kennydale Beach Parking Lot and the adjacent slope?
Kennydale Neighborhood Association has taken care of that property on Burnett Ave, near 36th St., for about 20 years!
What started as a very unsightly area, overgrown with blackberries, weeds and horsetail rushes, became a beautiful piece of property in the center of lower Kennydale.
The following is some history of how the landscaped area of the Kennydale Beach Parking lot came about.

About 20 years ago, KNA member Diana Wallace had a vision and applied for a Neighborhood grant through the City of Renton's Neighborhood Program. The grant was approved. The area was excavated and about 36 volunteers got together and worked several days planting trees, bushes and ivy near the parking lot and the adjacent slope on Lake Washington Blvd. N. A former neighbor, Walter Cook purchased and donated the fence and had it installed. Benches were donated and installed to enable neighbors to enjoy watching the eagles soaring or have a picnic lunch.
A few years later Darius Richards engineered plans and applied for another grant to have sprinklers installed to water the slope. The system is not automated, and requires someone to turn on the sprinklers. When a neighborhood receives grants for these types of projects, the neighborhood is obligated to maintain the property and pay the water bill for life. This property isn't your typical property but a large parking lot and slope. How many associations are maintaining city property of this size? We have had volunteers in the past 20 years who have helped us throughout the spring and summer to pull weeds and prune back ivy. Normally we begin the spring clean up in March and work weekly throughout the summer. So far, this year we have worked 99 volunteer hours maintaining this area. |

A big thank you to Rajendra Agrawall, Renee Perrault, Jon Bye, Krista Nefton, Pam Miller, Gayle Shure, Leigh and Bruno Nicoli, and of course, Darius Richards, for your help and for the love you have shown for our neighborhood to keep it beautiful.
If anyone is interested in helping out please let me know. This year we only work in small groups, no big work parties as in the past. We also social distance and wear masks, if able.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

KNA Board Landscape Maintenance Chair
