CHANGES TO THE KNA BOARD

The end of 2018 marked the retirement of three members of the KNA Board: Lynne Milnor, our Secretary and former Neighborhood Picnic chairperson; Natalie Yusen, our Welcome Committee chairperson, and Justin Hoover.  All three have been valued contributors to the operation of the Board and the planning and staging of our meetings and events; we will miss them, and wish them well in their future endeavors.

Knowing several months ago that these people would be leaving, our KNA Nominating Committee set out to find people who were eager to serve on the Board, and at the successful conclusion of that search, four individuals were elected by the KNA membership at the October 29, 2018 Neighborhood Meeting: Leah and Mike Battin, Dave Huhs, and Paul Miller. We are very pleased to have these folks “on board”, as we continue with our mission of enhancing the quality of life in Kennydale and fostering community spirit!

At the Kennydale Neighborhood meeting on January 29, a cake and beverages will be served at 6:45 – 7:00 pm to honor our three retirees, and welcome our four new Board members.

NOVEMBER FOOD DRIVE RESULTS!

The students of Kennydale Elementary School, their parents and other caring Kennydale residents came together again to make the Annual Fall Food Drive a great success, with 2416 items of food being donated.  The collected food was delivered each day to the Reach Center of Hope in Renton, who utilizes these donations to support the work of the Center and also the Renton Meal Coalition.

Here is an excerpt from the Center’s January 2019 Thank-you message to the public:

“Thanks to all of our wonderful End-of-Year gift givers, including…...
Kennydale Neighborhood Association & Kennydale Elementary School
The neighborhood association once again sponsored their long-running food drive, which took place over the entire month of November.  Showing that caring can happen at any age, the students at Kennydale Elementary were heavily involved and our pantry is now well stocked – supporting both the Center of Hope as well as the Renton Meal Coalition! “

This year, the winning class at Kennydale Elementary was the Third Grade class of Ms. Margie Dugan, who collected 204 food items!  A Pizza Party for them will be held in January, with delicious pizzas donated by the Papa John’s Pizza restaurant on NE 4th Street.
Special thanks are due also to our Food Drive Chairperson, Marcie Palmer, and the other Kennydale residents who picked up the food donations throughout the Drive and transported them to the Reach Center of Hope: Michael Palmer, Leah & Jack Battin, Paul & Pam Miller, Dave Huhs, Marlene Winter, Debbie Keppler, Pat Conger, Sharon Moats, Lynne Milnor, and Darius & Vicki Richards.

Reach Center of Hope Volunteer, Dante Diggins, sorts several days worth of donations.

….and in a further gesture of caring…

In early December, a group of Kennydale neighbors gathered together all sorts of toiletries: toothbrushes & paste, deodorant, hand gel, soaps, lotions, socks, combs, hair clips and a variety of other hygiene supplies, which were assembled into 50 attractive bags and then donated to the Reach Center of Hope.  Participants in this activity were Leah Battin, Janice Dougherty, Karen Easton, Stephanie Fife, Kayla Huhs,   Marcia LeVeque, Pam Miller, Linda Nguyen, Jenn Welling,  Marlene Winter, and Vicki Richards (pictured)..

KNA HOLIDAY BONFIRE WARMS THE HEART…
...and the hot cocoa and toasted s’mores helped as well!

Picture
Our annual event was held on the evening of December 11th, at the Coulon Park north picnic shelter.  Throughout the evening, over 50 people dropped by at one time or another, to enjoy the fire, hot beverages, and s’mores (most of which were prepared and eagerly consumed by the many kids in attendance)! For anyone who has driven by Coulon Park during December evenings without stopping, the lighted trees, landscaping and buildings are definitely worth the time it takes to walk around the decorated part of the park...and many of the folks who were at the bonfire took advantage of the mostly un-rainy weather to do just that!

Special thanks to our KNA Board member, Janice Dougherty,  for chairing this event every year, to her husband Jim for his fire-building expertise, and to one of our new Board members, Leah Battin, for assembling at least 100 “s’mores kits” so that the kids could get right to the important work of roasting and eating!

Thanks also to our co-host for this event, the City of Renton Neighborhood Program, and to the City of Renton Parks Dept. for the marvelous lighting displays that get better and better each year!
